Traumatic Bereavement and Loss Training

McCarthy O’Connor Training and Consultancy provide Traumatic Bereavement and Loss Training. As experienced clinicians and trainers in this area we have long known that this type of training is essential. Research recently published in the Journal ‘Suicide and Life Threatening Behavior’ tells us that instead of the previously understood figure of 6 people impacted by each death by suicide, the figure is closer to 135 people exposed. In ireland that means an annual figure of 67,500 people impacted each year if 500 death by suicide occur, this translates to 675,000 people since 2008. This highlights the public health issue that this is within our Country. McCarthy O’Connor Training and Consultancy have been delivering Traumatic Bereavement and Loss training since our foundation. Based on sound International evidence and research, our training provides the knowledge base for supporting suicide bereaved. This is essential as exposure to suicide of a relative increases your risk for depression, admission to psychiatric care and suicide death. This new evidence highlights the need for appropriate postvention responses in communities, workplaces, schools, health services, sports organisations and other places to respond and support those impacted, so as to ammeliorate the impact of the exposure to the suicide.
McCarthy O’Connor Training and Consultancy Traumatic Bereavement and Loss Training is supportive of a number of Actions contained in Ireland’s National Strategy for Suicide Prevention, www.nosp.ie and has already been delivered in some Health Service Executive areas. We work closely with international colleagues in the academic and research field to ensure there is sound emperical evidence underpinning our training in Traumatic Bereavement and Loss Training.
