Mental health is often mixed up with mental illness. Mental health is “ not just the absence of mental illness. It is a state of well-being in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. (WHO, 2007)
The promotion of employee well-being including mental health has benefits for employing organisations-in greater job and life satisfaction, decreased stress leading to increased productivity and profitability. However” unrecognised mental health problems at work such as job related stress, depression and anxiety lead to reduced productivity, low job satisfaction, absence from work and increased healthcare costs (Barry & Jenkins,2007).
